2015 High School / CEGEP Teaching Award Winners

The CAP and its award partners - Perimeter Institute, TRIUMF, Nelson Education, and the Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of BC - are pleased to announce the recipients of the 2015 CAP High School/CEGEP Teaching Award Winners. Recipients will be presented with their awards at their school, the CAP Congress, or some other appropriate event as coordinated with the recipient and school.

The 2015 CAP Award for Excellence in Teaching High School/CEGEP Physics (British Columbia and Yukon) is awarded to

James Strachan, Kelowna Secondary School, in recognition of for his ability to motivate students to levels of high academic achievement using innovative and instructional strategies. With his work in Science Teachers LSA, his encouragement of students in the "Art of Physics" contest, and his mentoring of students in the Young Innovator Scholarship competition, his educational leadership in and out of the classroom is exemplary.


"Across Canada physics educators strive to build both knowledge of, and passion for, physics in our students. To be recognized among my peers, and to be in the company of the dedicated educators who have previously been recipients of the CAP High School Teaching Award is a great honour."

The 2015 CAP Award for Excellence in Teaching High School/CEGEP Physics (Prairies and Northwest Territories) is awarded to

Patrick Kossmann, Greenall High School, in recognition of for his creative work in encouraging students to learn physics. A Physics teacher and a drama coach, his classes are engaging and enjoyable, while maintaining top standards of academic excellence.


"I am grateful that I was nominated for this award and humbled that I was chosen. I would like to thank all the people who were willing to say such nice things about me and my teaching. This award symbolizes all the amazing people I have worked with and leaned from over the years."

The 2015 CAP Award for Excellence in Teaching High School/CEGEP Physics (Ontario) is awarded to

James Ball, J.F. Ross CVI, in recognition of his mastery at recognizing how individual students learn best. From having students use hand-held whiteboards to draft their ideas and solutions to problems, to using YouTube videos to show physics in the real world, to his leadership in the OAPT, to his mentoring of students in the Sir Isaac Newton OAPT prize exams, to his work in charitable activities, he has shown himself to be an exceptional physics teacher both in and out of the classroom.


"Teaching physics is something that I love to do and am passionate about. To be recognised as being good at something that I love to do is both amazing and humbling at the same time. I would like to thank the selection committee and my colleagues and students who nominated me."

The 2015 CAP Award for Excellence in Teaching High School/CEGEP Physics (Quebec and Nunavut) is awarded to

Raynald Richer, Cégep de Chicoutimi, in recognition of for his excellent working at popularizing physics for students. A founder of the Science demonstration Centre in Saguenay Lac- St-Jean, M. Richer has led the fight against students dropping out of science at a regional level. His innovative use of demonstrations communicating physical phenomena of sound, air, light, electricity, and more, have pushed many students to pursue science at higher levels of education.


"I am happy, as well as surprised and honoured, to receive this award. I would like to thank the Canadian Association of Physicists and its partners for their generosity. This award is a great opportunity to go further in the popularization activities of physics conducted by the Centre de démonstration scientifique, and to promote them."
