The Canadian Association of Physicists (CAP) and the Institut National d'Optique (INO) are pleased to announce that the 2008 CAP-INO Medal for Outstanding Achievement in Applied Photonics is awarded to Jacques Beaulieu, INRS, in recognition of for the invention of the transversely-excited atmospheric carbon dioxide laser as well as his work in system performance modeling. announcement

A high caliber physician and researcher, Dr Beaulieu has had a decisive influence on the development of high power lasers and their application in various fields including defense and medicine. In particular, he was responsible for the discovery of the portable high power pulsed carbon dioxide laser, recognized around the globe as a technological revolution for laser processing as well as for plasma generation and studies. His work has led to technology transfers, the creation and growth of photonic industries, and to the generation of new products on the market place.
