"It is a great honour to receive the CAP Industrial and Applied Physics medal. This recognizes not just my own contributions, but also those of my many excellent collaborators, postdocs and graduate students, who have greatly enriched and contributed to the work. The importance of this award is to acknowledge the innovations in fiber optics technology from a Canadian group, which is something that I am passionate about. Furthermore, I am grateful to Prof. Béla Joos, who has nominated me." winner quote
The Canadian Association of Physicists (CAP) is pleased to announce that the 2013 CAP Medal for Outstanding Achievement in Industrial and Applied Physics is awarded to Xiaoyi Bao, University of Ottawa, in recognition of for her remarkable technological advances in a number of areas; notably in the monitoring of polarization mode dispersion (PMD) of field fibers and their impact on high speed communication networks. In addition she has led in the development of distributed sensors to monitor the health of civil infrastructures, technological advances that have been embraced by industry and led to new products. announcement
Dr. Bao is the Canada Research Chair in fiber topics and photonics in the Department of Physics at the University of Ottawa. She had made significant breakthroughs in; stimulated Brillouin and Rayleigh scattering based fiber sensors for temperature, strain, vibration, and acoustic sensing; micro- and nano- fiber based devices, sensors and lasers; coherent random lasers; and birefringence measurement for fiber communications. Dr. Xiaoyi Bao has revolutionized the field of distributed fiber sensors for temperature, strain, birefringence, refractive index, vibration and acoustic wave measurements by a series of innovations that have now significantly exceeded the accepted physical limits. Her current record for spatial resolution (centimetres) and long sensing range (up to 150km) have led to improved monitoring of civil structures, aerospace and hydro and nuclear power generators. Additionally, her remarkable work on a dynamic impairment emulator, on polarization mode dispersion (PMD) and polarization dependent losses have been used by telecom researchers to evaluate and correct signal distortions in communication systems allowing the design of efficient high speed communication systems. In the late 90s, her PMD protocol played a key role in upgrading the telecommunication system connecting the east and west coast information highway of Canada. Her technologies are embraced by industry. Seven have been transferred to companies in US, Japan and Canada, and have led to products on the market. And her students and PDFs spread those technologies. Dr. Bao is a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (RSC), of the Optical Society of America (OSA) and the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE). She has co-authored over 200 refereed journal publications, and 9 book chapters. nominator citation
