The Canadian Association of Physicists (CAP) is pleased to announce that the 2022 CAP Medal for Lifetime Achievement in Physics is awarded to Charles Gale, McGill University, in recognition of his profound contributions as a world leader in high-energy nuclear science, and in the physics of strongly interacting matter under extreme conditions of high temperature and density . announcement

For his groundbreaking work in theoretical subatomic physics, in particular in the fields of relativistic nuclear collisions and of finite-temperature field theories. Professor Gale has made many seminal contributions to the knowledge of hot and dense nuclear matter, and to transport theory in nuclear collisions at high energies. He is well known for his pioneering work on the emission of electromagnetic radiation from the plasma created in the relativistic collisions of heavy nuclei, and for his studies of jets propagating in strongly interacting media.

Professor Gale has also co-authored an authoritative textbook on field theories at finite temperature, a text that has established itself as a standard reference in the field and that is used by a wide spectrum of the astrophysics, nuclear, and particle physics communities. He has mentored and trained a large number of students and postdoctoral fellows currently contributing to society in academia, industry, and government. nominator citation

ABOUT the Medal

The CAP Medal for Lifetime Achievement in Physics is awarded on the basis of distinguished service to physics over an extended period of time, and/or recent outstanding achievement. This annual medal was introduced in 1956.

A series of virtual plenary medal talks will be organized to honour the 2022 medal recipients. The talk schedule will be posted on the CAP's website and notification of each talk will be issued once arranged. The medal will be forwarded to Charles Gale with the congratulations of the community. medal description
