The Canadian Association of Physicists (CAP) is pleased to announce that the 2020 Allan Carswell Physics Educator Scholarship is awarded to Samantha Scarfe, University of Ottawa, in recognition of Although the form does not allow it, we strongly recommend that both Samantha Scarfe and Joshua Mogyoros be awarded the Carswell Scholarship. Both are outstanding, highly motivated physicists and educators who have the ability to make a big difference to physics pedagogy at the secondary school level. Ms. Scarfe has recently completed her Master of Science degree at the University of Ottawa. Her love for delivering physics education began as an undergraduate, where she had the opportunity to serve as Teaching Assistant in the first-year labs. Since then, her passion for communicating physical concepts to students, particularly those with negative preconceptions of physics, has continued to grow as she has become more experienced in the early University Physics curriculum. nominator citation

ABOUT the Scholarship

The Allan Carswell Physics Educator Scholarships recognize the critical importance and value of having people who are trained in, and passionate about, physics engaging young Canadians in the classrooms of this country. The scholarships, valued at up to $5000 each, are awarded annually to one or two physics students with a strong academic record and a demonstrated passion for physics and physics pedagogy and who, following their physics degree, will be pursuing a teacher program that leads to a provincial teaching licence. These scholarships are made possible through a generous endowment from the Carswell Family Foundation. These scholarships were first awarded in 2020. medal description
