The Canadian Association of Physicists (CAP) is pleased to announce that the 2014 CAP Award for Excellence in Teaching High School/CEGEP Physics (Quebec and Nunavut) is awarded to Stéphan Gaumont-Guay, Cégep Limoilou, in recognition of for his pioneering role in pedagogical development that has resulted in a significantly improved rate of success for students taking physics. announcement

Recognized for his skills as an extraordinary teacher, Stéphan Gaumont-Guay centered his preoccupations around educational methods. He has played a pioneering role in the development of many educational methods, making the student as the principal agent in building his knowledge, hence as key to his success. In particular, he made a name for himself in developing problem-based learning as well as an active learning lab. As a teacher in Cégep Limoilou since 1999, he could find his niche and, most of all, inspire his colleagues and students in problem-based learning as well as in the development and use of an active learning class. Moreover, he took part in various activities related to a teacher’s task : author and editor of physics textbooks, contribution to CCDMD’s site, sponsor of student teams that took part in the annual challenge « Sciences, on tourne », lecturer, etc. In summary, his contribution to the development of Cégep Limoilou, both with regards to the quality training he gives to his students, but also of the institutional development he is spurring through his innovative ideas and projects, Stéphan Gaumont-Guay stands out, as a teacher, and deserves the Award for Teaching Excellence of physics in high school and college. nominator citation
