Brendan Kelly

The Canadian Association of Physicists (CAP) is pleased to announce that the 2012 CAP Award for Excellence in Teaching High School/CEGEP Physics (Atlantic) is awarded to Brendan Kelly, Kinkora Regional High School, in recognition of . announcement

Brendan Kelly has been a devoted educator at Kinkora Regional High School since 1978. He graduated from St. F. X. in 1976 with his Bachelor of Science Degree and again two years later with his Bachelor of Education degree. He has spent his entire career dedicated to the students of K.R.H.S. In addition to teaching Physics, AP Physics, Chemistry, Math, Information Technology and Science, Brendan has also been known to teach Economics, Life Skills, and Computer Repair. In July 2009, Brendan attended a week-long institute in Toronto dealing with Advanced Placement Physics. The AP program is internationally standardized in that all students worldwide write the same final exam in mid-May. Thanks to Brendan Kelly, K.R.H.S. is the first school on P.E.I. to offer AP Physics.
For more than 35 years, Brendan, affectionately known as B. K. to his students, has been the heart & soul of the Blazer Women’s Basketball team. Brendan also plays a crucial role at graduation, taking care of all the behind the scenes details and serves as emcee at our grad banquet. He fought hard to keep our small school open when the threat of closure loomed and then fought even harder for a new gymnasium when we had our recent renovations. Brendan also ran the K.R.H.S. canteen for many years before we had a cafeteria.
As Past-President of B.B.E.M.A. (the Bedeque Bay Environmental Management Association) and a dedicated volunteer with Scouts Canada, the environment is a very important issue to B. K. and he infuses environmental education into all of his courses.
Brendan Kelly has contributed an incredible amount of time, talent, spirit and energy to both teaching Physics and to school life in general at K.R.H.S. Brendan and his wife, Diana, live on the Colville Road in Kingston, P.E.I. They have three grown children. nominator citation

The Canadian Association of Physicists, founded in 1945, is a professional association representing over 1600 individual physicists and physics students in Canada, the U.S. and overseas, as well as a number of Corporate, Institutional, and Departmental Members. In addition to its learned activities, the CAP also undertakes a number of activities intended to encourage students to pursue a career in physics. cap description
