The Canadian Association of Physicists (CAP) is pleased to announce that the 2024 CAP Award for Excellence in Teaching High School/CEGEP Physics (British Columbia and Yukon) is awarded to Mark Lam, Eric Hamber Secondary School, Vancouver, BC, in recognition of his passion and dedication to teaching physics, particularly his dedication to ensuring students have a depth of physics understanding and his support of students embarking on, and succeeding in, physics-related competitions. Mr. Mark Lam, a physics teacher at Eric Hamber Secondary School in Vancouver, stands out as an exceptional role model and a pillar of the high school physics community in British Columbia. His dedication to education and lifelong learning is demonstrated through his impressive academic background, including a double major in math and physics, a Bachelor of Education from UBC, and a Masters of Mathematics for Teachers from the University of Waterloo. Mark’s teaching emphasizes conceptual understanding and big-picture thinking, inspiring students to engage meaningfully with physics. Outside the classroom, Mr. Lam’s humility and kindness set him apart. He supports his students by maintaining high standards while providing the necessary assistance for them to excel. Mr. Lam has significantly transformed the physics program at Eric Hamber Secondary School. He introduced AP Physics in 2019 and later expanded the offerings. Mark encourages student participation in various physics competitions, such as the CAP High School Prize Exam, UBC Physics Olympics, Kwantlen Science Challenge, CanSat Design Challenge, and the PhysicsBowl Contest. His students consistently achieve high scores in AP exams and excel in extracurricular activities. The students have placed highly in all the aforementioned competitions, reflecting Mark’s ability to inspire and nurture their interest in physics.
