The Canadian Association of Physicists (CAP) is pleased to announce that the 2025 CAP Award for Excellence in Teaching High School/CEGEP Physics (Prairies and Northwest Territories) is awarded to Philip Goldthorpe, Edmonton Public School Division, in recognition of his ability to inspire students to be “Lovin’ the Physics” and encouraging them to be independent lifelong learners, earning him a reputation of being a “physics teacher of generational talent”. announcement

Philip Goldthorpe is filled with passion for this subject of physics, and his goal is nothing short of inspiring students to be “Lovin’ the Physics.” He is a storyteller and magician, bringing the content to life and transforming the classroom to a place of wonder. He is a blend of the old and the new, writing all of his notes on a whiteboard while fortifying this approach with timely PowerPoints and applets. Phil has the highest of expectations for both students and himself, and he strives to fully prepare students for post-secondary and to develop independent lifelong learners. He is a reflective practitioner who is unafraid to completely change his pedagogical approach if it leads to enhanced learning. Phil is humble, strongly believing that he can learn from anyone around him, and he respects and honours all students within his classroom. He is a collector and shameless wearer of science and cycling t-shirts, all gifts from colleagues and students, and he is an unheralded DJ within his classroom.
