The Canadian Association of Physicists (CAP) is pleased to announce that the 2005 CAP/DCMMP Brockhouse Medal for Outstanding Achievement in Condensed Matter and Materials Physics is awarded to Dr. David Lockwood, National Research Council of Canada for his major contributions to the elucidation of fundamental optical effects in low-dimensional systems, and for his seminal work on the light-emitting properties of porous silicon.

Dr. David Lockwood is recognized internationally for excellence in the field of inelastic light scattering. After obtaining a MSc. and Ph.D. (1969) from the University of Canterbury in New Zealand, David worked at Waterloo and Edinburgh universities. He then joined NRC (more than 27 years ago), where his career has centered on the optical properties of condensed matter, including studies of magnetic and structural phase transitions, magnons, electronic excitations and phonons in insulators and semiconductors. The common characteristics of David’s career have always been the early recognition of the potential of new material systems, the design, execution and detailed interpretation of exquisite light scattering experiments which attacked the key issues and his willingness to ensure that the improved understanding of the physics was made known to the device community. He has also been tireless in his efforts to support the physics community through membership on Editorial Boards, organization of conferences and contributions to learned societies such as CAP.

The Brockhouse medal was introduced for the first time in 1999 and is sponsored jointly by the Division of Condensed Matter and Materials Physics (DCMMP) and the Canadian Association of Physicists (CAP). It is named in honour of Bertram Brockhouse, whose outstanding contributions to research in condensed matter physics in Canada were recognized by the 1994 Nobel Prize for Physics. The medal is awarded annually. Dr. Lockwood will receive the 2005 Medal during the CAP's awards banquet to be held at the University of British Columbia on June 7th, 2005.

The Canadian Association of Physicists, founded in 1945, is a professional association representing over 1600 individual physicists and physics students in Canada, the U.S. and overseas, as well as a number of Corporate and Departmental Members. In addition to its learned activities, the CAP also undertakes a number of activities intended to encourage students to pursue a career in physics.
